  1. Make sure you have an iTunes account and that your computer has the latest version of iTunes installed. If you want to create an iTunes account without using a credit card, click here.
  2. Unbox your iPad and locate the sync cable. Plug the cable into the dock connector at the bottom of the iPad and plug the USB end of the cable into your computer. When you do this, iTunes will automatically launch.
  3. Follow the directions to register your iPad.
  4. Agree to the Legal Terms.
  5. Enter your iTunes account information.
  6. Enter registration details.
  7. At this point you may be offered an opportunity to set up Find My Computer (or iPad).  Please skip for now (you can set it up later).
  8. Set up your iPad as a completely new device, even if you are using your own computer (To save time--you can add items stored on your computer later).
  9. Name your iPad and for now, set synchronization to not copy anything (music, video, apps, etc.) from the computer. You can change these settings later after you've decided which files and apps you do want to copy to the iPad.
  10. Eject the iPad from the tray in the left-hand side of iTunes either by clicking the Eject button or by right clicking the iPad icon and selecting Eject .
