iOS 6 offers several ways you can back-up or sync your iPad. At some point you will need to decide if you will use the iCloud storage feature. Because this decision requires some research and thought, we will initially activate and register your iPad without setting up iCloud. Use the links provided here to learn more about iCloud.

What is iCloud?

Ultimate iCloud Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Before you get started:

  1. Make sure you have an iTunes account (also called Apple ID) and that your computer has the latest version of iTunes installed. If you want to create an iTunes account without using a credit card, click here
  2. Unbox your iPad and locate the sync cable. When you sync your iPad to your laptop, you will need to plug the cable into the dock connector at the bottom of the iPad and plug the USB end of the cable into your computer. When you do this, iTunes will automatically launch.

Activate and register your iPad

  1. Turn your iPad on by pressing the Power button until you see a silver apple on the screen.
  2. Select the language you want to use on your iPad.
  3. Select the country where you live.
  4. You may be asked to enable Location Services (optional).
  5.  Connect to a WiFi network. (required)
  6. Set up your iPad as a new device. Later you can sync it with iTunes on your laptop to copy libraries.
  7. Sign in using your Apple ID (iTunes account) information
  8. You may be asked to enter your birthdate (so Apple can retrieve your Apple ID password later, if lost).
  9. You may be offered an opportunity to set up your email connection. Skip this for now.
  10. You will be offered an opportunity to set up iCloud. Tap Don't use iCloud for now.
  11. At some point you will need to agree to the Legal Terms.
  12. Tap Start Using iPad.

Syncing to your laptop

  1. Unbox your iPad and locate the sync cable. Plug the cable into the dock connector at the bottom of the iPad and plug the USB end of the cable into your computer. When you do this, iTunes will automatically launch.
  2. Eject the iPad from the tray in the left-hand side of iTunes either by clicking the Eject button or by right clicking the iPad icon and selecting Eject .
